Welcome to Van Diemen Fencing Club!
We are a friendly and inclusive family club, with members aged from 5 to 85+. We have both social and competitive members ranging from beginners to State reps and ex National reps.
Van Diemen Fencing Club always welcomes new members, from beginners to experienced fencers. We love travelling fencers to drop by too.
We have training on Tuesday evenings and regular beginner courses, workshops and tournaments.
Our regular Sunday Squad sessions are perfect for Intermediate to Experienced fencers who want to improve their game for social or competitive fencing.
In 2011, our Guest Coach was Sabre coach Magalie LeDu.
In Feb-March 2015, our Guest Coach was Henry de Silva of the UK.
VDFC was launched in June 2010 after Avery Holderness-Roddam, Club Owner and Epee Coach, returned to fencing after a three-year break for study. He had been so disappointed to find that the once thriving fencing community was down to only two small fencing clubs in Tasmania, with no tournaments and no State Representatives.
Avery took his fencing and coaching experience, sourced new equipment and a venue, and started VDFC at YMCA Glenorchy. He was lucky enough to have the support and advice of seasoned mentors such as ACTFA's Hans Dimpel and Fencing Victoria's Pieter Leeuwenbergh; not to mention nationally respected armourer, Jeff Gray, who ensured the club's first Epees were in working condition and supplied the club's first scoring apparatus!
After one year the venue was too small for the growing number of members and, after searching for the perfect home for a while, Van Diemen Fencing Club took up permanent residence at the Tolosa Street Hall in 2014. This new venue was thanks to member Jeff Bronstein, who organised a meeting for us with the GCC and Andrew Wilkie, who advocated for us to have a new home.
VDFC holds fencing courses and tournaments regularly and enjoys the participation of several current and previous State and National Representatives each week.
The club is committed to educating the public and raising awareness of Fencing. The Coaches regularly run fencing tasters and demonstrations for groups, including Lady Gowrie, CatholiCare, Girl Guides, the Seas Scouts, the Glenorchy City Council's GOLD Program and local schools and colleges.
Sabre, Epee and Foil are all available to enjoy at the club.
In 2016, Rosa joined the club as a fencer but also as our armourer. She keeps our equipment up to FIE (International Fencing Federation) standards and maintains all of the electrics.
In July we took three of our young Epeeists (Fin, Caelan and Alex) to the Victorian Schools' League Tournament #4; their first time competing interstate! Out of seventy-two fencers, they came 19th (Fin), 23rd (Caelan) and 24th(Alex).
VDFC is currently playing a large role in establishing the Tasmanian Fencing Association (TFA).
